Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Diagnostic System Check

WARNING: To avoid injury from accidental air bag deployment, read and carefully follow all SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM procedures in AIR BAG SYSTEM SAFETY article in GENERAL SERVICING.
CAUTION: If any water enters the vehicle's interior up to the level of the carpet or higher and soaks the carpet, the Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) and the SDM harness connector may need to be replaced. With the ignition OFF, inspect the SDM mounting area, including the carpet. If any significant soaking or evidence of significant soaking is detected, you must remove all water, repair the water damage, replace the SDM harness connector and replace the SDM.
  1. Note air-bag indicator on dashboard while turning ignition on. If air-bag indicator flashes 7 times, go to next step. If air-bag indicator does not flash 7 times, see SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS - DEVILLE, ELDORADO & SEVILLE article.
  2. Connect scan tool. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, see TEST A: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  3. Try to establish communications with SDM. If scan tool communicates with SDM, go to next step. If scan tool does not communicate with SDM, see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  4. Use scan tool to request Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) trouble code display. If scan tool displays any current or history DTCs, go to next step. If scan tool does not display any current or history DTCs, system is okay at this time.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with a "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", see TEST B: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool displays DTC B1000, see DTC B1000: ECU MALFUNCTION  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If scan tool does not display DTC B1000, diagnose any other DTCs that are present. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
