DTC 54, Feds Fuel Enable Failure: Notes

Fuel Enable Data Stream (FEDS) fuel enable system utilizes serial data link between CCM and PCM to perform a password exchange routine when ignition is on. When password exchange is successful, fuel injectors are enabled.

DTC 54 will set when ignition is on and CCM successfully communicated with PCM, but CCM was unable to exchange a valid FEDS password with PCM for a specified time period.

When DTC 54 is set, FEDS fuel enable bit is set, SECURITY indicator and SYS will illuminate, and fuel injectors will be disabled. If ignition is on and a scan tool test has been selected, cycling ignition off and then on without first exiting test may cause DTC 54 to set. In this case, DTC 54 will likely be displayed as a history code.

If serial data link malfunction occurs while vehicle is running, FEDS will keep PCM fuel enabled to prevent a no-start condition on next start attempt. If serial data link malfunction occurs while vehicle is not running, FEDS will not enable fuel.

If vehicle exhibits a "cranks but will not run condition", FEDS exchange has not been successfully completed. If vehicle will not crank, CCM is not satisfied with PASS-Key(R) signal and is not allowing cranking, or a problem may exist in cranking system.

DTC 54 will clear when ignition is on and CCM successfully exchanges CCM-to-PCM FEDS password.
