September 30: LEMON manuals is back up on a temporary server! Slowness is possible
Engine Does Not Crank, Starter Solenoid Does Not Click (A/T)
- Put gear selector in Park or Neutral. Connect DVOM between starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace starter solenoid.
- Locate Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe PNP switch connector terminal No. 5 (Black/Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between PNP switch and starter solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe PNP switch connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, check for poor connection at PNP switch. Repair as necessary. If PNP switch connection is okay, replace PNP switch. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Locate instrument panel junction block. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe instrument panel junction block 18-pin connector C6, terminal No. 15 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition to START position. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair open in Black/Red wire between PNP switch and instrument panel junction block. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe instrument panel junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, check instrument panel junction block connection. If connection is okay, replace instrument panel junction block and retest operation.
- Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe instrument panel junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 3 (White/Green wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Retest operation.
- Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe instrument panel junction block 2-pin connector C7, terminal No. 1 (White/Green wire). If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, check instrument panel junction block connection. If connection is okay, replace instrument panel junction block and retest operation.
- Locate underhood fuse box. Using DVOM connected to ground, backprobe underhood fuse box Black 2-pin connector C4, terminal No. 1 (White/Green wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, replace underhood fuse box and retest operation.
- Repair open in White/Green wire between instrument panel junction block 2-pin connector C7, terminal No. 1 and IG fuse (60-amp). Retest operation.
