Cruise Control Inoperative/Malfunctioning
- Following manufacturer's instructions, install scan tool. Check for any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) which could effect operation of cruise control. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect cruise control module harness connector. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Pink wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 36 .
- Using test light connected to cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" (Black wire), probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" (Pink wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 37 .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Turn cruise control functional switches to OFF position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminals "A" (Gray wire), "B" (Dark Blue wire) and "C" (Gray/Black wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates at any connection, go to step 16 .
- Turn ignition and cruise control functional switches to ON position. Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" (Gray wire). If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 17 .
- With ignition and cruise control functional switches set to ON position, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" (Dark Blue wire) using test light connected to ground. Press and hold SET/COAST switch. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 19 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" (Gray/Black wire). Press and hold RESUME/ACCEL SWITCH. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 20 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control release switch Brown wire terminal. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If test light illuminates, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21 .
- Depress brake pedal while observing test light. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 22 .
- Using test light connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" (White wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 23 .
- Depress brake pedal while observing test light. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 24 .
- Using test light connected to battery voltage, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" (Dark Green wire). If test light does not illuminate, leave test light connected and go to next step. If test light illuminates, go to step 25 .
- Following manufacturer's instructions, connect scan tool. Command CRUISE INHIBIT/ENABLE OFF. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 26 .
- Using DVOM connected to ground, probe cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step 27 .
- Raise and support vehicle so drive wheels may be rotated. Block one drive wheel. Set gear selector in DRIVE position. Set DVOM to volts AC scale. Using DVOM connected to ground, measure voltage at cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" (Dark Green wire) while rotating unblocked drive wheel. If voltage varies 0-5 volts, go to step 35 . If voltage is not as described, go to step 28 .
- Check wire(s) that caused test light to illuminate for short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair wire(s) as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If no problem was found, go to step 34 .
- Check Gray wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal A12 for open or high resistance. Repair Gray wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Check Pink wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F", cruise control functional switches terminal A13 and CRUISE fuse (10-amp) located in instrument panel fuse block for open or high resistance. Repair Pink wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 34 .
- Check Dark Blue wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal A14 for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Blue wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 34 .
- Check Gray/Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "C" and cruise control functional switches harness connector terminal A15 for open or high resistance. Repair Gray/Black wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 34 .
- Check Brown wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" for open or high resistance. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 29 .
- Check Brown wire between cruise control release switch harness connector terminal "A" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "D" for short to voltage. Repair Brown wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 29 .
- Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for short to voltage. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 30 .
- Check White wire between brakelight switch harness connector terminal "B" and cruise control module harness connector terminal "G" for open or high resistance. Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 30 .
- Check Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 for short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 33 .
- Check Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "H" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 72 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 33 .
- Check White wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "J" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 59 for open, high resistance or short to voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair White wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 33 .
- Check Dark Green wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "K" and PCM harness connector C1 terminal No. 55 for open or high resistance. Repair Dark Green wire as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If wire is okay, go to step 33 .
- Check cruise control release switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE & BRAKELIGHT SWITCHES under ADJUSTMENTS. If adjustment is okay, go to step 31 .
- Check brakelight switch for proper adjustment. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE & BRAKELIGHT SWITCHES under ADJUSTMENTS. If adjustment is okay, go to step 32 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control release switch. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step 38 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at brakelight switch. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step 39 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at PCM harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step 40 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control functional switches harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step 41 .
- Check for poor connections or connector damage at cruise control module harness connector. Repair or replace as necessary. After repair, check system for normal operation. If connections are okay, go to step 42 .
- Repair Pink wire as necessary between cruise control module harness connector terminal "F" and CRUISE fuse (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Repair Black wire between cruise control module harness connector terminal "E" and chassis ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace cruise control release switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE & BRAKELIGHT SWITCHES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace brakelight switch. See CRUISE CONTROL RELEASE & BRAKELIGHT SWITCHES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace and program PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Replace cruise control functional switches. See CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTIONAL SWITCHES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation.
- Replace cruise control module. See CRUISE CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, check system for normal operation. If system is still inoperative or malfunctions, return to step 2 .
