Steering Column Control Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Cadillac Seville. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

After replacement of steering column control module, it is necessary to program tilt/telescoping soft stops. Each soft stop is a programmable end of travel that is set approximately 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) from mechanical end of travel. Steering column has a soft stop set at each end of tilt up/down movement and at each end of telescoping in/out movement. This system uses soft stops to prevent wear on system by ensuring that steering column movement stops before it reaches its mechanical end of travel in any direction. Soft stops are initially programmed at factory. Stop positions may be reprogrammed, which is necessary any time steering column tilt/telescoping module is replaced, as described in the following procedure.

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  2. To set tilt up soft stop, press tilt/telescoping COLUMN UP switch at least 8 times or until column moves, then release switch.
  3. Press tilt/telescoping COLUMN UP switch and hold until column travels all the way up, and continue to hold switch about a second after motion stops at mechanical end of travel. Soft stop for column up position is now set. Tilt/telescoping module will automatically go back to normal mode of operation.
  4. Repeat steps  2 and  3 , using COLUMN DOWN switch, to set column down position soft stop.
  5. Repeat steps  2 and  3 , using COLUMN IN switch, to set column out position soft stop.
  6. Repeat steps  2 and  3 , using COLUMN OUT switch, to set column in position soft stop.
