Steering Gear Boot Replacement

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  2. If equipped, remove the steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .
1 Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Nut
2 Steering Gear Boot Outer Clamp
3 Steering Gear Boot Inner Clamp

Procedure

  1. Cut the old steering gear boot inner clamp.

    Discard the clamp.

  2. Use the J-22610:  pliers in order to crimp the new steering gear inner boot clamp.

Special Tools: 
J-22610:  Keystone Clamp Pliers
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools .
4 Steering Gear Boot

Procedure

  1. After removing the boot, inspect the inner tie rod for evidence of corrosion or contamination. If none is evident, continue with the repair. If corrosion or contamination is evident, replace the steering gear. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement .
  2. Ensure the new steering gear boot is seated in the assembly groove of the steering gear.
