Internal Components
The OD splines of the input shaft (1) are mated to the ID splines of the transmission output shaft. When commanded by the rear differential clutch control module, the PTU actuator motor rotates the worm gear (9) and rotary cam (8) to engage AWD. The input (1) and input disconnect (3) shafts are mated via the internal teeth of the shift collar (6). A helical gear set transfers power from the input disconnect shaft (3) to the idler gear shaft (15). A second gear set, the hypoid gear set transfers power and torque from the idler gear shaft (15) to the rear output shaft (12). The propeller shaft is mated to the rear output shaft providing power and torque to the rear drive axle. The OD splines of the intermediate drive shaft (11) mate to the ID splines of the transmission carrier assembly and provide power and torque to the right front axle shaft and wheel.
During normal driving situations, the power transfer unit operates in FWD mode with no rotation of the rear propeller shaft. The rear differential clutch control module monitors wheel slip speed based on the inputs from the wheel speed sensors and/or vehicle speed sensor. When the vehicle experiences a wheel slip condition, the control module sends a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the actuator motor to engage AWD mode will remain active until the slip condition has ended. The process would repeat if wheel slip is detected again.
