VTSS Test 1A - Identifying Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) Problems

NOTE: Perform SYMPTOM ID TEST 1A  before proceeding with this test. For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Perform, after each repair, TEST VER-1A - VERIFICATION PROCEDURE  .
CAUTION: Always turn ignition switch to OFF position prior to disconnecting or connecting any module connector.
NOTE: If complaint is: VTSS indicator lamps stay on constantly (30 seconds after key is turned on) or while driving vehicle, see TEST 13A  in VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) and select THEFT ALARM. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, perform VTSS TEST 2A  . If scan tool reports a bus failure message, see VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS  .
  2. Using scan tool, select BODY. Select BODY COMPUTER and then READ DTCs. If BATTERY POWER TO MODULE fault message is present, see VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS  . If DRIVER DOOR DISARM SWITCH INPUT is present, see VTSS TEST 11A  . If PASSENGER DOOR DISARM SWITCH INPUT is present, see VTSS TEST 12A  . Go to next step.
  3. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM. Select MONITOR DISPLAY and read VTSS status. If VTSS mode is not disarmed, perform VTSS TEST 1B  . If VTSS mode is disarmed, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM. Select MISCELLANEOUS and CHANGE MODE. Select DIAGNOSTICS to put VTSS in diagnostics mode. Follow instructions displayed by scan tool. If PUT IGNITION IN OFF POSITION displays, go to next step (VTSS is in diagnostics mode). If PUT IGNITION IN OFF POSITION does not display, perform VTSS TEST 3A  .
  5. When VTSS is put into diagnostics mode, horn should sound 2 times and headlights and VTSS indicator light should flash. If horn sounds 2 times and headlights and VTSS indicator light flash, go to next step. If horn does not sound, perform VTSS TEST 4A  . If VTSS indicator light does not flash, perform VTSS TEST 5A  . If headlights do not flash, perform VTSS TEST 6A  .
  6. With scan tool still connected to DLC, remove key from ignition switch. Open and close each door, then use key to turn each front door from lock to unlock position. If horn sounds after each action, go to step 8). If horn does not sound after each action, perform test indicated. See VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIRECTORY table.
VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIRECTORY

    Problem Perform
Left Front Door VTSS TEST 7A
Right Front Door VTSS TEST 8A
Right Rear Door VTSS TEST 9A
Left Rear Door VTSS TEST 10A
Left Front Door Key Cylinder (Disarm Circuit) VTSS TEST 11A
Right Front Door Key Cylinder (Disarm Circuit) VTSS TEST 12A
  7. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If horn sounds, go to next step. If horn does not sound, perform VTSS TEST 3A  .
  8. Using scan tool, select THEFT ALARM. Select MONITOR DISPLAY and read VTSS status. If VTSS status is not DISARMED, or PCM is not OK TO ARM/OK TO RUN ENGINE, go to next step. If VTSS status is DISARMED and PCM is OK TO ARM/OK TO RUN ENGINE, system is functioning properly.
  9. If VTSS status is other than DISARMED, perform VTSS TEST 1B. If PCM status is 1) NO RESPONSE, 2) NO RESPONSE, go to TEST 13A  in VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS. If PCM status is 1) OK TO ARM VTSS, 2) NOT OK TO RUN ENGINE, replace Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If there is a problem with RKE arm/disarm function, see VTSS TEST 8A  .
  10. If VTSS light stays on constantly during arming process (15 seconds) but flashes properly when armed, go to VTSS TEST 4C  . If RKE arm/disarm function is not operating correctly, go to POWER DOOR LOCK TEST 8A  .
  11. On JX models, if garage door opener and decklid release lockout does not function correctly, go to VTSS TEST 13A  . If decklid release does not function using RKE transmitter, go to VTSS TEST 14A  .
