Tachometer Not Operating Properly
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, attempt to communicate with Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If communication was established, go to next step. If communication was not established, repair communication concern. See NO RESPONSE FROM POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCI BUS) under COMMUNICATIONS.
- Turn ignition off. Press and hold trip button on instrument cluster while turning ignition on. If tachometer sweeps from zero RPM to 6000 RPM then back to zero RPM, go to next step. If tachometer does not sweep from zero RPM to 6000 RPM then back to zero RPM, replace instrument cluster.
- Using scan tool, retrieve PCM DTCs. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, repair powertrain concern as necessary. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Start vehicle. Using scan tool, monitor engine RPM signal to PCM. If greater than 400 RPM is displayed, go to next step. If 400 RPM or less is displayed, replace PCM.
- Using scan tool, monitor RPM signal to instrument cluster. If greater than 400 RPM is displayed, replace instrument cluster. If 400 RPM or less is displayed, replace PCM.
