Test NTC-36: Engine Hesitates, Stumbles Or Has Poor Acceleration
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor temperature value (sensor read test No. 27). IAT sensor temperature value should be identical to intake air temperature. If values match, go to next step. If values do not match, check IAT sensor circuits. See TEST NTC-41: INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT .
- Ensure ignition is on. Using scan tool, read Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) value (sensor read test No. 11). MAP sensor reading should be 30 in. Hg with altitude of zero feet or 26 in. Hg with altitude of 3937 feet. If MAP sensor reading is as specified, go to next step. If MAP sensor reading is not as specified, check MAP sensor circuits. See TEST NTC-42: MAP SENSOR CIRCUIT .
- With ignition on or engine running, using scan tool, read Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor temperature value (read test No. 05). ECT sensor temperature value should match actual engine coolant temperature. If values match, go to next step. If values do not match, check ECT sensor circuits. See TEST NTC-40: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT .
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read TP sensor voltage (sensor read test No. 7). With throttle closed, voltage should be 400 millivolts or more. With throttle fully open, voltage should be 3800 millivolts or less. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step. If voltage is as specified, check TP sensor circuits. See TEST NTC-45: THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR CIRCUIT .
- Ensure ignition is on. Using scan tool, actuate EGR solenoid (actuator test No. 16). EGR solenoid is located at left rear of engine compartment, on intake plenum. See Figure. If EGR solenoid clicks, go to next step. If EGR solenoid does not click, check EGR solenoid circuits. See DTC TEST NO. 8: EGR SOLENOID CIRCUIT .
- Start engine. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, read left downstream Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) voltage sensor (read test No. 63) and right downstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 73) while road testing vehicle under the following conditions. With shift selector in "L" position, briefly depress accelerator to wide open throttle until engine speed is at 3500 RPM or more. HO2S voltage reading should be 600-1000 millivolts. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check downstream HO2S circuits. See TEST NTC-44: DOWNSTREAM HO2S CIRCUIT .
- Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, read left upstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 02) and right upstream HO2S voltage (sensor read test No. 47). Voltage should be 600-1000 millivolts when engine is suddenly accelerated. If voltage is as specified, go to next step. If voltage is not as specified, check upstream HO2S circuits. See TEST NTC-43: UPSTREAM HO2S CIRCUIT .
- With engine idling at normal operating temperature, upstream HO2S voltage should change from 0-400 millivolts to 600-1000 millivolts. If voltage is as specified, go to 10. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.
- Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Remove 2 bolts retaining fuel plate to end of fuel rail and remove fuel plate. Attach fuel pressure gauge with Hose Adapter (MD998742) and Adapter Hose (MD998709 ). Install fuel pressure gauge, hose and adapter between fuel rail and fuel plate. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select FUEL SYSTEM TEST and note fuel pressure. This will activate fuel pump and pressurize fuel system. Ensure fuel does not leak from connections at fuel pressure gauge, hose and hose adapter. Start engine and allow it to idle. Fuel pressure should be 47-50 psi (3.3-3.5 kg/cm2 ). Raise engine RPM several times. Ensure fuel pressure at idle does not drop. Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure and remove test equipment. If fuel pressure is not as specified, go to next step. If fuel pressure is as specified, check for plugged injectors.
- If fuel pressure is low, drops after raising RPM or no fuel pressure is present in fuel return hose, check for plugged fuel filter, fuel leaking to return side due to poor fuel regulator valve or weak spring (faulty fuel regulator), or low fuel pump delivery pressure (faulty fuel pump). Repair fuel system as necessary.
NOTE:
During EGR solenoid actuator test, EGR solenoid will turn on and off approximately every 2.8 seconds.
CAUTION:
Use caution when removing fuel plate from fuel rail, as residual fuel pressure may be released.
