Service Engine Soon Indicator Light

NOTE: The SERVICE ENGINE SOON light may also be referred to as the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL). MIL is located in the information center on top of driver's side of instrument panel. After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Using scan tool, check for any engine Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If any DTCs exist, go to SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - CARAVAN, TOWN & COUNTRY, & VOYAGER article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Repair as necessary. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
  2. If MIL does not remain on steady with no DTCs present, go to step  5 . If MIL remains on steady with no DTCs present, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment between left inner fender and power distribution center. Turn ignition on with engine off. Observe MIL. If MIL remains on, go to the next step. If MIL goes off, replace PCM.
  4. Disconnect information center 13-pin connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Black/Pink wire) at information center 13-pin connector. See Figure . If resistance is 100 ohms or more, replace information center circuit board. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in Black/Pink wire between PCM and MIL in information center.
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. PCM is located in engine compartment between left inner fender and power distribution center. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 22 (Black/Pink wire) at PCM connector C1. See Figure . Observe MIL operation. If MIL is off, go to next step. If MIL is on, replace PCM.
  6. Disconnect information center 13-pin connector. Inspect connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, remove and inspect MIL bulb and socket. If bulb and socket are okay, go to next step. If bulb and/or socket is defective, replace as necessary.
  7. Ensure jumper wire is still connected between ground and PCM connector terminal No. 22 (Black/Pink wire). Ensure information center connector is still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 7 (Black/Pink wire) at information center 13-pin connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace information center circuit board. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Pink wire between PCM and MIL in information center.
