DTC P1398: Misfire Adaptive Numerator At Limit: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read DTCs. If GOOD TRIP is displayed and equal to zero, go to step  4 . If GOOD TRIP is not displayed and equal to zero, go to next step.
    NOTE: Check for any technical service bulletins that may apply to this DTC.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read freeze frame data. Use this information to help duplicate conditions that set DTC. Using scan tool, select MISCELLANEOUS MENU, then CLEAR PCM BATTERY DISCONNECT to reset PCM. Select MISFIRE PRETEST. Road test vehicle to relearn adaptive numerator. Adaptive numerator is learned when ADAPTIVE NUMERATOR DONE LEARNING line on scan tool screen changes to YES. If adaptive numerator relearned, go to next step. If adaptive numerator did not relearn, go to step  4 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect CKP sensor and related harness connectors. Check for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Visually inspect related wiring harness. Check for chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires. Ensure CKP sensor mounting bolts are tight. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, test is complete.
  4. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect CKP sensor and related harness connectors. Check for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Visually inspect related wiring harness. Check for chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires. Ensure CKP sensor mounting bolts are tight. If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  5. Inspect CKP sensor for proper installation. If CKP sensor is installed properly, go to next step. If CKP sensor is not installed properly, repair as necessary.
  6. Turn ignition off. Remove CKP sensor. Inspect tone wheel/flex plate slots for damage, foreign material or excessive movement. If any problems are found, repair or replace tone wheel/flex plate as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  7. If no other possible causes are remaining, replace CKP sensor.
