Checking Brake Switch Performance
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to DLC and monitor BRAKE SWITCH INPUT state. Turn ignition on. Depress and release brake pedal several times. If scan tool display matches brake pedal status, system is operating properly at this time. If scan tool display does not match brake pedal status, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check brake switch adjustment. See BRAKE SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS. Using scan tool, monitor BRAKE SWITCH INPUT state. Turn ignition on. Depress and release brake pedal several times. If scan tool display matches brake pedal status, system is operating properly at this time. If scan tool display does not match brake pedal status, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, read DTCs. If DTC P0703: BRAKE SWITCH #2 CIRCUIT sets, see DTC P0703: BRAKE SWITCH #2 CIRCUIT test in DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2002) table or DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2003) table. If any other DTCs are set, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2002) table or DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES & MESSAGES (2003) table. If no DTCs are set, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect brake switch connector. Remove brake switch. See BRAKE SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Using DVOM, measure for continuity at specified brake switch terminals (component side) with plunger in specified position. See Fig 1. See BRAKE SWITCH CONTINUITY table. If continuity is not as specified, replace brake switch. See BRAKE SWITCH under ADJUSTMENTS.BRAKE SWITCH CONTINUITY
Switch Plunger Position (1) Check Between Terminals No. Continuity Released 1 & 2 No ..... 3 & 4 No ..... 5 & 6 Yes Depressed 1 & 2 Yes ..... 3 & 4 Yes ..... 5 & 6 No (1) When brake pedal is released, switch is depressed. When brake pedal is depressed, switch is released.
