Instrument Cluster: Notes
The instrument cluster for the PT is referred to as an ElectroMechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC). The EMIC provides the following standard functions:
- Analog gauges: Speedometer, Tachometer, Fuel Level, and Engine Coolant Temperature
- Warning and Status Indicators
- Courtesy Lamp Output Control
- Instrument Panel Illumination Sensing and Output Dimming Control (Radio, HVAC, Switches)
- Parade/Funeral Mode Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) Illumination
- Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Output
- Cluster Diagnostic Support
- VF Display for features such as Odometer, Trip, P-Codes, Messages and Autostick PRNDL (if equipped)
- Fuel Sensing and Broadcasting onto the PCI Bus
- Broadcast Vehicle Status onto the PCI Bus such as: Door Ajars, Liftgate Ajar, IOD, and Key in Ignition
All of the Warning/Status indicators except the High Beam are light emitting diodes (LED) and are not serviceable. The High Beam indicator is a serviceable incandescent bulb. The gauges are not individually serviceable, requiring the complete replacement of the EMIC if any LED indicator or any gauge is defective or inoperative.
Some of the indicators will illuminate briefly as a Bulb Check when the ignition is cycled from the Off to the Run position. The Oil indicator will illuminate with the ignition in the Run position and the engine is off. The Seatbelt indicator will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds with the ignition in the Run position or will remain illuminated until the driver seatbelt is buckled.
All of the analog gauges are oil-damped to ensure smooth pointer needle movement. All of the gauges, except the Fuel gauge, receive and position the pointer needles based upon information received via the PCI data bus. The Fuel Level Sensor is hardwired to the EMIC. The EMIC senses fuel level by applying voltage to the fuel level sensor resistor and interpreting the resulting voltage drop to ground through the sensor. The EMIC uses an internal microprocessor algorithm to determine the pointer needle position and also broadcasts the fuel level on the PCI data bus. The EMIC microprocessor uses an adaptive learning process to provide a more precise fuel level indication to the vehicle operator.
In the event that the EMIC detects communication loss with all other modules on the PCI data bus, the EMIC will illuminate "no bus" in the VFD. If the EMIC does not detect voltage on the battery B(+) circuit, the message "FUSE" will alternate with the odometer/trip odometer display when the ignition is in the Run position and will continue to flash until the vehicle is moved or voltage is restored to the circuit.
