DISTRIBUTORLESS Ignition System
The distributorless ignition system used on these engines is referred to as, the Direct Ignition System (DIS). The system's three main components are the coil pack, Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor, and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. The CKP sensor and CMP sensor are Hall Effect devices. The CMP sensor and CKP sensor generate pulses that are inputs to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM determines engine position from these sensors. The PCM calculates injector sequence and ignition timing from crankshaft and camshaft position. For a description of both crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, see INPUT DEVICES under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS.
