Description And Operation: Description
| 1 - ESM |
The Electronic Shift Module (ESM) in this vehicle is the shifter assembly.
Gear range selection on the transmission is accomplished using the ESM. The vehicle uses an ESM with position sensing and neutral block release. The ESM communicates on the Controller Area Network - Chassis (CAN C) bus as well as a CAN - Electronic Powertrain (CAN EPT) bus communication with the Power Inverter Module (PIM) to control gear shift selection instead of a conventional shift cable. With the ignition ON and the brake pedal applied, the driver can rotate the shift knob to select either the Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive or Low position. The driver request is transmitted over CAN C and CAN EPT for all functions of the powertrain. The ESM is fastened to the Integrated Center Stack (ICS), located in the center console.
