Spark Test

  1. With ignition off, remove fuel pump and injector relays from relay block. See Fig 1 . Connect an inductive timing light to the coil wire.
  2. Crank engine. Timing light should flash as engine is cranked. If timing light does not flash, check ignition coil, ignitor and distributor connections.
  3. If connections are good, check resistance of high-tension wires. If resistance is not within specification, replace wires. See HIGH TENSION WIRE RESISTANCE  . If wires are okay, proceed to next step.
  4. With ignition on, check for voltage at positive (+) terminal of ignition coil. If no voltage exists, check wiring between ignition switch and ignition coil. If voltage exists, proceed to next step.
  5. Check ignition coil resistance. See IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE TESTS  . Replace ignition coil if resistance is not within specification. If coil resistance is within specification, proceed to next step.
  6. On 3-cylinder models, check pick-up coil resistance. See PICK-UP COIL RESISTANCE TEST  . Replace distributor if pick-up coil resistance is not within specification. If resistance is within specification and all previous tests were okay, replace ignitor.
  7. On 4-cylinder models, check distributor pick-up air gap. See DISTRIBUTOR PICK-UP AIR GAP  . If air gap is within specification and all previous tests were okay, replace ignitor.
