Testing Spark At Coil

WARNING: 3.8L Direct Ignition System (DIS) generates approximately 40,000 volts. Direct contact with DIS could result in personal injury.
NOTE: Ignition components may be damaged if test is performed with more than 1/4" clearance between wire and engine ground.
  1. This system has 3 independent coils. These coils must be tested separately. Remove spark plug wire from spark plug No. 2. Insert a clean, known good spark plug into boot and ground spark plug to engine. Crank engine, and watch for spark between electrodes of spark plug. Repeat this test for 5 remaining cylinders.
  2. If no spark is present on any cylinder tested, go to NO-START TEST  . If one or more cylinders has weak or no spark, remove spark plug wires individually. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance of each spark plug wire. Resistance should be 3000-12,000 ohms per foot (250-1000 ohms per inch). Replace spark plug wire(s) if resistance is not within specification. If spark plug wires are okay, go to next step.
