Clock Spring: Removal

  1. Turn steering wheel until front wheels are in straight-ahead position before starting repair. Disconnect negative battery cable. If airbag system is undeployed, wait two minutes for system capacitor to discharge before further service. Remove driver airbag. Remove steering wheel.
  2. Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds to gain access to clock spring wiring. Disconnect two-way connector between clock spring and instrument panel wire harness at base of steering column. To remove, lift locating fingers of clock spring assembly from steering column as necessary. See Fig 1 . The clock spring cannot be repaired it MUST BE REPLACED, if faulty, or if driver airbag has been deployed.
