Fuel Pressure Test

NOTE: If fuel pressure is not present or fuel pump is inoperative, go to FUEL DELIVERY under FUEL SYSTEMS in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
CAUTION: Use caution when removing fuel plate from fuel rail as residual fuel pressure may be released.
  1. Release fuel pressure, see FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  . Remove 2 bolts retaining fuel plate and remove from fuel rail. Attach fuel pressure gauge with Hose Adapter (MD998742) and Adapter Hose (MD998709). Install fuel pressure gauge, hose and adapter between fuel rail and fuel plate.
  2. Using scan tool, select actuator test No. 07 (FUEL PUMP) to operate fuel pump. See ACTUATOR TEST in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Ensure fuel does not leak from connections at fuel pressure gauge, hose and hose adapter. Stop pump using scan tool. Start engine and allow to idle. Fuel pressure should be approximately 38 psi (2.7 kg/cm2 ).
  3. While engine is idling, disconnect and plug vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pressure should change to 47-50 psi (3.3-3.5 kg/cm2 ). If fuel pressure does not change when vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator is removed, check for damaged vacuum hose or fuel pressure regulator nipple, or defective fuel pressure regulator.
  4. Rev engine several times. If fuel pressure is low, drops after raising RPM or no fuel pressure is present in fuel return hose, check for clogged fuel filter, fuel leaking to return side due to poor fuel regulator valve or weak spring (faulty fuel regulator), or low fuel pump delivery pressure (faulty fuel pump). If fuel pressure is too high, check for clogged fuel return line or stuck fuel pressure regulator. Repair as necessary, then go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and observe fuel pressure gauge reading. Wait 2 minutes. Fuel pressure should not drop. If fuel pressure does not drop, system is okay. If fuel pressure drops gradually after engine is stopped, check for leaky fuel injector or leaky fuel regulator valve seat. If fuel pressure drops quickly immediately after engine is stopped, check for valve in fuel pump being held open. Repair as necessary.
  6. After completing fuel pressure test, reconnect hoses and fuel lines as necessary and tighten hose at fuel rail to 36-54 INCH lbs. (3.9-5.9 N.m). Check for leaks. Using scan tool, select actuator test No. 7 (FUEL SYSTEM TEST) to operate fuel pump. See ACTUATOR TEST in appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article. Ensure fuel does not leak from connections.
