DTC P1698: No Bus Message From Trans Control Module: Testing

  1. Turn the ignition on. With the DRBIII® scan tool, erase DTCs. Start the engine, allow the engine to run for at least 20 seconds with the gear selector in Drive. Repeat at least 2 times. With the DRBIII® scan tool, read DTCs. Does the DTC reset? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITION  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. CAUTION: Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install Miller Special Tool (8815) to perform diagnosis.
  3. Turn the ignition off. Disconnect the PCM harness connectors. With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, and with the Miller Special Tool (8815) installed, probe the (F11) fused ignition switch output circuit at the appropriate terminal of the Miller Special Tool (8815). Perform the above check with the ignition key in the off lock position, ignition on, engine not running position, and during cranking. Wiggle the related wire harness while probing the Miller Special Tool with the test light to try to interrupt the circuit. Does the test light illuminate brightly? If yes, go to next step. If no, repair the open or excessive resistance in the (F11) fused ignition switch (OFF, RUN, START) circuit. Inspect the related fuse, if the fuse is open check the circuit for a short to ground.
  4. NOTE: Determine which modules this vehicle is equipped with before beginning. When attempting to communicate with any of the modules on this vehicle, the DRBIII® scan tool will display 1 of 2 different communication errors, a NO RESPONSE message or a BUS +/- SIGNALS OPEN message.
  5. Ignition on, engine not running Using the DRBIII® scan tool, attempt to communicate with the remaining control modules. Was the DRBIII® scan tool able to communicate with one or more Module(s)? If yes, replace and program the PCM. See PROGRAMMING . If no, see PCI BUS COMMUNICATION FAILURE under COMMUNICATIONS in appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
