When the ignition is turned off, the MCU is also turned off. Since a long term memory circuit for prior system operation is not provided for, an initialization function feature of this system is activated when the ignition is turned on. The initialization function moves the metering pins, Fig. 5, to the pre-determined starting position by first moving them all the way to the rich end stop, and then in the lean direction by a predetermined number of steps. Regardless of what position the metering pins were in before initialization, they will be at the correct position at the end of every initialization period.

Since each open loop operation metering pin position is dependent on the initialization function, this function is the first test in the diagnostic procedure.
