Module, Power Inverter (PIM): Operation: Operation
The Power Inverter Module (PIM) is the connection between the High Voltage Battery and the e-Motor. It converts the Direct Current (DC) of the High Voltage Battery into the Alternating Current (AC) required to power the Electric Motor.
In addition, the PIM, through the integrated DC-to-DC Converter, converts the High Voltage DC to the Low Voltage DC System and provides power to the 12 Volt Battery and current up to 170 amps to support the Vehicle Low Voltage electrical accessories. The PIM is a replacement of the alternator function for the gasoline engine.
The PIM performs the following functions:
- Control of the High Voltage e-Motor.
- Supplies energy to the High Voltage Electric A/C Compressor (EAC).
- Supplies energy to the Air Electric Heater (AEH).
- Houses, and supplies energy to, the DC-to-DC Converter for 12 Volt Low Voltage operation.
- Houses the high voltage fuse that is designed to open the high voltage system in the event of an excessive current draw.
