Module, Electronic Steering Lock (ESL): Description

A shaft lock module (also known as the Electronic Steering Column Lock/ESCL or the Elektronische Lenkungs Verriegelung/ELV) is located near the upper end of the steering column housing below the instrument panel in the passenger compartment. The shaft lock module includes a molded plastic cover that conceals and protects the electronic circuitry of the module, which includes a single integral connector receptacle. The electronics of the module are connected to the vehicle electrical system through a dedicated take out and connector of the instrument panel wire harness.

The bi-directional electric motor that actuates the locking bolt is contained within a die cast metal housing. That housing includes an integral saddle type mounting bracket that is clamped securely to the steering column housing by two tamper resistant screws. The mounting provisions for the shaft lock module are designed to resist unauthorized tampering. The module cannot be removed from the steering column while the steering column is installed in the vehicle.

The shaft lock module cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if ineffective or damaged, it must be replaced.
