Support Yoke-To-Rack Clearance
- Clean steering gear exterior and mount gear in soft-jawed vise or holding fixture. Remove yoke cover, gasket, shims and yoke spring.
- Clean cover and housing flange areas. Reinstall yoke and cover without gasket, spring or shims. Tighten cover bolts until cover just touches yoke.
- Measure gap between cover and housing flange. Then select shims which, together with cover gasket, are .005-.006" (.13-.15 mm) thicker than measured gap.
- Remove cover and assemble gasket on housing flange. Install shim pack, spring and cover. Install and tighten bolts evenly. Check that steering gear operates smoothly without binding or looseness.
