Centrifugal Advance Mechanism Test

  1. Set base ignition timing. Disconnect vacuum advance hose and increase engine speed to 2500 RPM. Check ignition timing with vacuum advance hose disconnected and then allow engine to return to idle. If ignition timing advanced, go to next step. If timing did not advance, replace distributor. After service, repeat this step.
  2. Check initial (base) timing at specified RPM. If ignition timing is within F2 degrees of specification, distributor centrifugal advance mechanism is okay. Go to next test. If initial (base) timing is incorrect, replace distributor.
