Test H: Front Wipers Run Continuously

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) scan tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is on instrument panel below steering column. Retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform On-Demand Self-Test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If the following DTCs are retrieved, go to specified step or test. See TEST H DIRECTORY  table.

    (1) Replace GEM. See GEM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  2. Using NGS tester observe GEM PID WPMODE while turning wiper switch through all positions. If PID values agree with wiper switch positions, go to step  6 . If PID values do not agree with wiper switch positions, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect multifunction switch (7-pin) connector. Test wiper portion of multifunction switch. See WIPER/WASHER SWITCH  under COMPONENT TESTS. If switch is okay, go to next step. If faulty, replace switch. See MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  4. Disconnect GEM C236 (16-pin) connector. Measure resistance between multifunction switch connector terminal No. 6 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair Light Blue/Orange wire short to ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Retest system operation.
  5. Measure resistance between multifunction switch connector terminal No. 1 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See GEM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair Pink/Yellow wire short to ground. After repair, retest system operation.
  6. Using NGS tester observe GEM PID WPRUN while toggling GEM active command WIPER RLY on and off. If PID agrees with command mode and displays ON--- and OFF---, go to step  9 . If PID does not agree with command mode and displays OFFO-G go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition off. Remove fuse No. 17 (30-amp). Disconnect GEM C223 (22-pin) connector. Measure resistance between GEM C223 connector terminal No. 8 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, reinstall fuse and go to next step. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace GEM. See GEM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  8. Remove wiper park relay. Measure resistance of between GEM C223 connector terminal No. 8 and ground. See Figure . If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, replace wiper park relay. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair Yellow/White wire short to ground. After repair, retest system operation.
  9. Turn ignition off. Remove wiper park relay. Turn ignition on. If wipers continue to operate, go to next step. If wipers stop operating, go to step  13 .
  10. Turn ignition off. Remove wiper high/low relay. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between wiper park relay connector terminal No. 3 and ground. See Figure . If no voltage is indicated, go to next step. If any voltage is indicated, repair Yellow/Red wire short to power. Retest system operation.
  11. Measure voltage between wiper high/low relay connector terminal No. 5 and ground. See Figure . If no voltage exists, go to next step. If any voltage exists, repair Dark Blue/Orange wire short to power. Retest system operation.
  12. Measure voltage between wiper high/low relay connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure . If no voltage exists, replace wiper high/low relay. If any voltage exists, repair White wire short to power. Retest system operation.
  13. Turn multifunction (wiper/washer) switch to OFF position. Measure voltage between wiper park relay connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If is less than 10 volts, replace wiper park relay. Retest system operation.
  14. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between wiper park relay connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure . If any voltage exists, go to next step. If no voltage exists, go to step  16 .
  15. Turn ignition off. Disconnect GEM C223 (22-pin) connector. Turn igniton on. Measure voltage between wiper park relay connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure . If any voltage exists, repair Dark Green wire short to power. If no voltage exists, replace GEM. See GEM  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest system operation.
  16. Reconnect wiper motor. Measure voltage between wiper park relay connector terminal No. 4 and ground. See Figure . If any voltage exists, replace wiper motor. See FRONT WIPER MOTOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If no voltage exists, repair Dark Green wire. After repair, test system operation.
