Timing Drive Components

  1. In order to carry out camshaft timing, the following components must be removed.
  2. NOTE: You must retime the LH and RH camshafts when either camshaft is disturbed.
  3. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the number one cylinder at top dead center (TDC).
  4. Remove the retainer and position the A/C manifold tube aside.

  5. NOTE: The special tool must be installed on the damper and should contact the engine block, this positions the engine at TDC.
    NOTE: Late build pulley shown, early build pulley similar.

  6. Install the special tool.
  7. Install the special tools to the RH cylinder head and tighten the two top clamp bolts.

  8. CAUTION: The RH camshaft sprocket bolt is a LH threaded bolt.

  9. Using the special tool with the Camshaft Sprocket Nut Socket 303-565, loosen the RH camshaft sprocket bolt.
  10. Loosen the top two special tool clamp bolts.

  11. NOTE: The camshaft timing slots are off-center.

  12. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools and install the special tools on the front of the RH cylinder head.
  13. Remove the RH camshaft tensioner.

  14. Install the special tool.

  15. CAUTION: The RH camshaft sprocket bolt is a LH threaded bolt.

  16. Tighten the bolts.
    1. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
    2. Using the special tool with the Camshaft Sprocket Nut Socket 303-565, tighten the camshaft bolt.
  17. Remove the special tool.

  18. Install the RH camshaft tensioner.

  19. Remove the special tools from the RH cylinder head.
  20. Install the special tools on the front of the LH cylinder head and tighten the top two clamp bolts.

  21. Loosen the LH camshaft sprocket bolt.

  22. Loosen the top two clamp bolts on the special tool to allow the camshaft sprocket to rotate freely.

  24. Position the camshaft timing slots below the centerline of the camshaft to correctly fit the special tools, and install the special tools on the rear of the LH cylinder head.
  25. Remove the LH camshaft tensioner.

  26. Install the special tool.

  27. Tighten the bolts.
    1. Tighten the special tool top two clamp bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
    2. Tighten the LH camshaft bolt.

  28. Remove the special tool.

  29. Install the LH camshaft tensioner.

  30. Remove the special tools from the LH cylinder head.
  31. Install the following components.
