Test D: Deck Lid Latch Inoperative Using Remote Keyless Entry Transmitter (DTC B1498, B1551 & B1553)

NOTE: To avoid setting false codes, disconnect battery power and ground before disconnecting Generic Electronic Module (GEM) harness connectors. After any repairs, clear DTCs and repeat GEM self-test.
  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. Observe GEM PIDS IGN_KEY, IGN_A, IGN_S and IGN_R while cycling ignition switch through OFF, ACC, RUN, START and key out positions. If PID values agree with ignition switch positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with ignition switch positions, test ignition switch. See IGNITION SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS in STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - MUSTANG article.
  2. Remove ignition key from ignition switch. Monitor GEM PID LAST DATA RECEIVED while depressing and releasing deck lid, panic, lock and unlock buttons of RKE transmitter. If LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match buttons depressed on RKE transmitter, go to next step. If LAST DATA RECEIVED matches buttons depressed on RKE transmitter, go to step  5.
  3. Install NEW batteries in RKE transmitter. Monitor GEM FUNCTION TEST TIC/DATA while depressing deck lid release button on RKE transmitter. If LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match button depressed on RKE transmitter, go to next step. If LAST DATA RECEIVED matches button depressed on RKE transmitter, system is okay.
  4. Reprogram all RKE transmitter(s). See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING . Monitor GEM FUNCTION TEST TIC/DATA while depressing lock and unlock buttons on RKE transmitter. If LAST DATA RECEIVED matches buttons depressed on RKE transmitter, system is okay. If LAST DATA RECEIVED does not match buttons depressed on RKE transmitter, program a NEW RKE transmitter. See TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING . Clear DTCs and repeat GEM self-test. If problem still exists, replace GEM and reprogram RKE transmitter. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
  5. Using scan tool, trigger GEM command deck lid release to on and off. If deck lid did not release, go to next step. If deck lid released, replace GEM. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
  6. Disconnect deck lid release relay harness connector. Deck lid release relay is located in relay box behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. Measure voltage between ground and deck lid release relay harness connector terminals No. 1 and 5 (Orange wires). See Fig 1. If more than 10 volts exist, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exist, repair open in appropriate Orange wire between deck lid release relay and deck lid release switch or fuse No. 25 (25-amp) in Central Junction Box (CJB). CJB is located behind left side of instrument panel. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  7. Connect a fused (25-amp) jumper wire between deck lid release relay harness connector terminals No. 3 and 5. If deck lid released, go to next step. If deck lid did not release, go to step  12.
  8. Test deck lid release relay. See DECK LID RELEASE RELAY  under COMPONENT TESTS. If deck lid release relay is okay, go to next step. If deck lid release relay is faulty, replace deck lid release relay.
  9. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C352. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to Central Junction Box (CJB). Measure voltage between ground and GEM harness connector C352 terminal No. 25 (Pink/Light Green wire). See Figure. If 10 volts or less exist, go to next step. If more than 10 volts exist, repair short to battery voltage in Pink/Light Green wire between GEM and deck lid release relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  10. Measure resistance between ground and GEM harness connector C352 terminal No. 25 (Pink/Light Green wire). See Figure. If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Pink/Light Green wire between GEM and deck lid release relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  11. Measure resistance of Pink/Light Green wire between GEM harness connector C352 terminal No. 25 and deck lid release relay harness connector terminal No. 2. See Figure and Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace GEM. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink/Light Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  12. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector C352. GEM is located behind left side of instrument panel, next to central junction box. Measure voltage between ground and deck lid release relay harness connector terminal No. 3 (Violet/Yellow wire). See Fig 1. If 10 volts or less exist, go to next step. If more than 10 volts exist, repair short to battery voltage in Violet/Yellow wire between deck lid release relay, deck lid release switch and deck lid release solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  13. Disconnect deck lid release solenoid 3-pin harness connector. Deck lid release solenoid is located on deck lid latch. Measure resistance of Violet/Yellow wire between deck lid release relay harness connector terminal No. 3 and deck lid release solenoid 3-pin harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Violet/Yellow wire between deck lid release relay and deck lid release solenoid. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
  14. Measure resistance between ground and deck lid release solenoid 3-pin harness connector Black wire terminal. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace deck lid release switch. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Black wire between deck lid release solenoid and ground. Ground point is located in left rear of vehicle. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
