All vehicles 

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING AND LIFTING .
  2. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  3. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
  4. Vehicles with air conditioning 

  5. Recover the A/C system. For additional information, refer to CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  6. All vehicles 

  7. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  8. Drain the engine oil.
    • Install the drain plug.

  9. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  10. Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
  11. Remove the air intake resonator. For additional information, refer to INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION & FILTERING .
  12. Disconnect the fuel tube. For additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
  13. Disconnect the vapor tube.

  14. Disconnect the engine emissions hose and the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) vacuum regulator solenoid electrical connector.

  15. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose.

  16. Disconnect the lower radiator hose, the heater hose and the overflow hose from the coolant bypass.

  17. Detach the hose, remove the screw and the pin-type retainer.
    • Remove the snow shield.

  18. Position aside the accelerator cable and speed control cable (if equipped).
    1. Disconnect the accelerator and speed control cable (if equipped) from the throttle body.
    2. Remove the three bolts and position aside the accelerator cable bracket aside.

  19. Disconnect the fuel injection supply manifold wiring harness electrical connector.

  20. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector.

  22. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Detach the shifter cable from the shift mast.
    2. Detach the selector cable from the selector lever.
  23. Detach the gearshift cables from the bracket.
    1. Detach the shifter cable from the bracket, turning the abutment sleeves counterclockwise.
    2. Detach the selector cable from the bracket, turning the abutment sleeves counterclockwise.

  24. WARNING: Escaping brake fluid. Do not allow brake fluid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. If brake fluid does come into contact with the skin or eyes, rinse the affected areas with water immediately. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilled on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.

  25. Remove the clutch slave cylinder supply line.
    • Remove the clip.
    • Remove the supply line and secure it to one side using cable tires.
  26. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  27. All vehicles 

  28. Disconnect the heater hose from the "T" fitting and position it aside.

  29. Remove the coolant expansion tank. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
  30. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.

  31. Remove the power steering pump pulley. For additional information, refer to POWER STEERING .
  32. Disconnect the PSP tube.

  33. Remove the power steering bolts and position the power steering pump aside.

  34. Disconnect the three main engine wiring harness electrical connectors.

  35. Remove the wiring harness retainers from the valve cover.

  46. Disconnect the transmission shifter cable and position it aside.

  53. Remove the nuts and detach the power steering pressure line brackets from the stud bolts and position aside.

  55. Remove the three A/C compressor bolts.

  56. Loosen the bolt and remove the A/C compressor.
    • Lower the A/C compressor to access the manifold bolt.
    • Discard the O-ring seals.
    • Disconnect the field coil electrical connector.

  58. Detach the LH brake hose from the support bracket.

  59. NOTE: Pull the caliper outward to release the piston.

  60. Detach the LH caliper.
    1. Remove the bolt covers.
    2. Remove the bolts.
  61. CAUTION: Suspend the caliper to prevent load from being placed on the brake hose.

  62. Support the brake caliper.
  63. Loosen the LH strut and spring assembly top mount nuts by four turns.

  64. Disconnect the LH stabilizer bar at the strut.

  65. Remove the LH tie-rod end nut.

  67. Using the special tool, disconnect both of the tie-rods from the knuckles.

  68. Disconnect both of the lower control arms from the knuckles.

  69. Remove the mounting bracket nuts, then remove the bracket from the halfshaft intermediate bearing.

  70. Remove the RH front drive halfshaft. Position the halfshaft aside and support with mechanic's wire.
    • Install a plug into the transaxle opening.

  71. Remove the LH front drive halfshaft from the transaxle.
    1. Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft from the transaxle.
    2. Install a plug into the transaxle opening.
      • Support the halfshaft using mechanic's wire.

  72. Remove the lower engine mount.

  89. Using the engine crane, remove the engine from the lift table.
  90. Remove the remaining bellhousing bolts and separate the engine and transmission.
  91. Install the special tool to prevent damage to the torque converter.
