Pinpoint Test D: Climate Control System Functional Test

  1. D1 CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform PCM  self-test.

    Are any climate control related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    1. Yes  : REFER to the PCM DTC CHART .
    2. No  : GO to D2 
  2. D2 CHECK THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform Body Control Module (BCM) self-test.

    Are any climate control related Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    1. Yes  : REFER to the BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) DTC CHART .
    2. No  : GO to D3 
  3. D3 CHECK THE HEATING, VENTILATION, AND AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC) CONTROL MODULE FOR DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS) 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module self-test.

    Are any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) present? 

    1. Yes  : REFER to the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module DTC chart .
    2. No  : GO to D4 
  4. D4 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR OPERATION 
    • Ignition ON.
    • Select panel mode.
    • Observe blower motor operation and select each blower motor speed.

    Does the blower motor operate in all ranges? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D5 
    2. No  : If the blower motor does not operate in any setting, GO to PINPOINT TEST M 

      If the blower motor does not correctly change speeds or turn off when the system is turned off, GO to PINPOINT TEST N 

  5. D5 CHECK AIRFLOW OPERATION 
    • Select the highest blower motor setting.
    • While observing the airflow, select each of the airflow positions (panel, panel/floor, floor, floor/defrost, defrost).

    Is the airflow directed to the correct outlets? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D6 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST F 
  6. D6 VERIFY TEMPERATURE CONTROL OPERATION 
    • Start the vehicle and allow it to reach normal operating temperature.
    • With the A/C  off, select panel mode.
    • Change the driver and passenger temperature settings from the coldest to the warmest and back to the coldest.

    Does the temperature change between very warm to cool? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D7 
    2. No  : If the temperature does not get very warm, GO to PINPOINT TEST G 

      If the Left Hand (LH) temperature does not change at all, GO to PINPOINT TEST K 

      If the Right Hand (RH) temperature does not change at all, GO to PINPOINT TEST L 

  7. D7 VERIFY THE ELECTRIC AIR CONDITIONING COMPRESSOR DOES NOT ENGAGE WITH AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) OFF 
    • With the engine running and the Air Conditioning (A/C) off, select panel mode.
    • Select the coldest temperature setting.

    Is the outlet temperature close to ambient air temperature? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D8 
    2. No  : If the Left Hand (LH) temperature is warmer than ambient air temperature, GO to PINPOINT TEST K 

      If the Right Hand (RH) temperature is warmer than ambient air temperature, GO to PINPOINT TEST L 

      If the outlet temperature is significantly colder than ambient air temperature and the electric A/C  compressor clutch cycles normally, GO to PINPOINT TEST I 

      If the outlet temperature is significantly colder than ambient air temperature and the electric A/C  compressor clutch is engaged and does not cycle, GO to PINPOINT TEST J 

  8. D8 VERIFY THE ELECTRIC AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) COMPRESSOR IS OPERATIONAL IN THE AIR CONDITIONING (A/C) MODE 
    • Make sure the ambient air temperature is above 2°C (36°F).
    • With the electric motor running, select panel mode.
    • Press the A/C  button (indicator on).

    Is the electric A/C compressor operational when the panel and A/C button (indicator on) is pressed? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D9 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST H 
  9. D9 CHECK THE RECIRCULATED AIR OPERATION 
    • With the electric motor running, press the recirculated air button (indicator off).
    • Select panel mode.
    • Select the highest blower motor setting.
    • Observe airflow noise.
    • Press the recirculated air button (indicator on).

    Does the airflow noise increase when the recirculated air mode is selected (indicator on)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D10 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST E 
  10. D10 CHECK THE LDFTEMP PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) 
    • Using a scan tool, view the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    • Monitor Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identification (PID) LDFTEMP.

    Is the temperature coming out of the driver footwell vent similar to the Parameter Identification (PID)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D11 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST O 
  11. D11 CHECK THE LDPT PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) 
    • Using a scan tool view the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    • Monitor Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identification (PID) LDPT.

    Is the temperature coming out of the driver side register similar to the Parameter Identification (PID)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D12 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST O 
  12. D12 CHECK THE AIRTEMP_RF PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) 
    • Using a scan tool view the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    • Monitor Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identification (PID) AIRTEMP_RF.

    Is the temperature coming out of the passenger footwell vent similar to the Parameter Identification (PID)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D13 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST O 
  13. D13 CHECK THE AIRTEMP_RP PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) 
    • Using a scan tool view the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    • Monitor Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identification (PID) AIRTEMP_RP.

    Is the temperature coming out of the passenger side register similar to the Parameter Identification (PID)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D14 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST O 
  14. D14 CHECK THE INT_TEMP PARAMETER IDENTIFICATION (PID) 
    • Using a scan tool view the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identifications (PIDs).
    • Monitor Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control module Parameter Identification (PID) INT_TEMP.

    Is the air temperature at the cabin temperature sensor similar to the Parameter Identification (PID)? 

    1. Yes  : GO to D15 
    2. No  : GO to PINPOINT TEST P 
  15. D15 CHECK THE TOUCHSCREEN CONTROLS OPERATION 
    • Using the touchscreen controls, select each climate control function.
    • Using the touchscreen controls, select each audio control function.

    Do all touchscreen controls operate? 

    1. Yes  : The system is operating correctly.
    2. No  : REFER to: INFORMATION AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM . (Sony® Sound)
