Removal and Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2013 Ford Escape. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure in this information, refer to SAFETY WARNINGS in SERVICE INFORMATION . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.
NOTE: This vehicle is equipped with SYNC® which contains the 911 Assist™ option.
NOTE: Carrying out PMI will not enable the 911 Assist™ option that is disabled.
NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.
  1. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
NOTE: The PMI process must begin with the current RCM installed. If the current RCM does not respond to the diagnostic scan tool, the tool may prompt for As-Built Data as part of the repair.

Using a diagnostic scan tool, begin the PMI process for the RCM following the on-screen instructions.

  2. WARNING: Turn the ignition OFF and wait one minute to deplete the backup power supply. Ignition must remain OFF until repair is complete. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury or death in the event of an accidental deployment.

If a SRS fault is present, continue to Step 3. Otherwise, turn the ignition off, wait at least one minute and continue to Step  4.

  3. Depower the SRS. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
  4. Remove the floor console. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL AND CONSOLE .

  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  6. If the SRS was depowered, repower the SRS. Do not  prove out the SRS at this time. Refer to SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEPOWERING AND REPOWERING .
  7. NOTE: This step is only necessary when installing a new component.

Using a diagnostic scan tool, complete the PMI process for the RCM following the on-screen instructions.

  8. If a new RCM was installed, prove out the SRS as follows:

Turn the ignition from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition back ON and monitor the air bag warning indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag warning indicator illuminates continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turns OFF. If an air bag SRS fault is present, the air bag warning indicator will:

    • fail to light.
    • remain lit continuously.
    • flash at a 5 Hz rate (RCM not configured).

The air bag warning indicator might not light until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition has been turned from the OFF to the ON position. This is the time required for the RCM to complete the testing of the SRS. If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS fault exists, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, the air bag warning indicator and any SRS fault discovered must be diagnosed and repaired. Clear all continuous DTCs from the RCM and OCSM.
