Pinpoint Test E : Transmission Range Sensor Fault

  1. E1 READ AND RECORD ALL DTCS

    • Using the diagnostic scan tool, retrieve all DTCs.

    Are TR sensor DTCs present?

    Yes  GO to  E2
No  PERFORM the TR Sensor Adaptive Learning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning .
  2. E2 CONFIRM THE TR SENSOR AND TCM CONNECTORS ARE LATCHED

    • Ignition OFF.

    • PUSH, PULL, CLICK C167 to confirm the TR sensor is connected.

    • VERIFY C1750A is connected and the lock lever is in the lock position.

    • VERIFY C1750B is connected and the lock lever is in the lock position.

Are the TR sensor and TCM connectors fully connected?

    Yes  GO to  E3
No  CONNECT the connectors and LOCK the lock levers on the TR sensor and the TCM. CLEAR the DTCs. Using the diagnostic scan tool, perform the KOER self-test. If DTCs return.
  3. E3 CHECK THE TR (TRANSMISSION RANGE) SENSOR POWER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TR Sensor C167.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

    • Ignition ON.

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

Is the voltage less than 4.5 volts?

    Yes  GO to  E5
    No  GO to  E4
  4. E4 CHECK THE TR (TRANSMISSION RANGE) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      C167-3

      C167-2

Is the voltage less than 4.5 volts?

    Yes  GO to  E5
No  INSTALL a new TR sensor. REFER to: Transmission Range (TR) Sensor . PERFORM the TR Sensor Adaptive Learning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning .
  5. E5 CHECK THE TR (TRANSMISSION RANGE) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.

    • Disconnect TCM C1750B.

    • Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed-out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

    Yes  GO to  E6
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  6. E6 CHECK THE TR (TRANSMISSION RANGE) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Measure:
Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms?

    Yes  GO to  E7
No  INSPECT and REPAIR the circuit shorted to ground. If a short to ground was not found, INSTALL a new TR sensor. REFER to: Transmission Range (TR) Sensor . PERFORM the TR Sensor Adaptive Learning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning .
  7. E7 CHECK THE TR (TRANSMISSION RANGE) SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO POWER

    Is any voltage present?

Yes  INSPECT and REPAIR the circuit shorted to power. If a short to power was not found, INSTALL a new TR sensor. REFER to: Transmission Range (TR) Sensor . PERFORM the TR Sensor Adaptive Learning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning .
No  INSTALL a new TCM. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) . PROGRAM the TCM with the latest calibration, REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning .
