Ignition Timing
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Plymouth Voyager, 1995 Plymouth Grand Voyager, 1995 Dodge Grand Caravan, 1995 Dodge Dakota, and 1995 Dodge Caravan. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Always refer to Emission Control Label in engine compartment before attempting service. If manual and label differ, always use emission label specifications.
CAUTION:
DO NOT puncture secondary ignition cables, boots or nipples with test probes.
- Ensure all lights and accessories are off. Place transmission in Neutral or Park, and set parking brake. If a magnetic timing probe is available, insert pick-up probe into receptacle next to timing scale window. If magnetic timing probe is not available, use an inductive timing light. Connect timing light pickup to No. 1 spark plug wire.
- Start engine, and run until normal operating temperature is reached. Connect Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB) to Data Link Connector (DLC). Select State Display screen.NOTE: When checking timing using DRB scan tester or by disconnecting coolant temperature sensor, radiator cooling fan will come on and malfunction indicator light will illuminate.
- If not using a DRB scan tester, turn off engine and disconnect engine coolant temperature sensor connector. Restart engine and run at specified speed. Aim timing light through window in bellhousing. See IGNITION TIMING table. If timing is incorrect, loosen distributor hold-down bolt and turn housing until specified timing is obtained.
- Recheck timing after tightening distributor hold-down bolt. Reconnect coolant temperature sensor connector. Erase any fault codes.
