Section 61 (Engine Controls - Basic Testing - 5.9L Diesel): Introduction

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1995 Dodge Pickup and 1995 Dodge Cab & Chassis. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The following diagnostic steps will help prevent overlooking a simple problem. Also begin here to diagnose a no-start condition.

The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is verifying the customer's complaint with a test drive under conditions during which the problem reportedly occurred.

Before entering self-diagnostics, perform a careful and complete visual inspection. Most engine control problems result from poor electrical connections or mechanical breakdowns. Before condemning computerized system, perform each test listed in this article.

Although various components, relays and switches are controlled and monitored by the PCM, the diesel injection system is not directly controlled by the PCM. For PCM system diagnosis, see TESTS W/CODES - 5.9L DIESEL article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
