Repair Procedures: Removal

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Remove the water cooled intercooler.

    (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "WATER COOLED INTERCOOLER ")

  3. Remove the Warm up Catalytic Convertor (WCC) upper heated oxygen sensor connector (A).

  4. Using the engine support fixture, hold the engine and transaxle assembly safely.

    (Refer to Special Service Tools - "ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE ASSEMBLY DRAWING ")

  5. Remove the transfer case assembly.[In case by AWD apply]
    1. Disconnect the AWD ECU connector.
    2. Loosen the transfer case upper mounting bolts (A).

    3. Loosen the transfer case bottom mounting bolts (B).

  6. Remove the front propeller shaft assembly.
    1. Loosen the front propeller shaft mounting bolts (A).

      Tightening torque: 

      49.0 - 68.6 N.m (5.0 - 7.0 kgf.m, 36.2 - 50.6 lb-ft)

    2. Remove the front propeller shaft (A).

    NOTE:
    • Mark the location and direction of bolt before removing the propeller shaft.
    • Installing the bolt and washer differently from the initial state can result in unbalanced propeller shaft causing abnormal vibration of propeller shaft at high speed.
    • Do not reuse the bolt.
  7. Loosen the bolts (A) and nuts (B) and then removing the transmission bracket (C).[In case by 2WD apply]

    Tightening torque: 

    1. 42.2 - 53.9 N.m (4.3 - 5.5 kgf.m, 31.1 - 39.8 lb-ft)
    2. 39.2 - 46.1 N.m (4.0 - 4.7 kgf.m, 28.9 - 34.0 lb-ft)

  8. Loosen the bolts and then removing the ground line (A).

  9. Remove the Warm up Catalytic Convertor (WCC).
    1. Disconnect the HO2 sensor (A).
    2. Remove the clamp (B).
    3. Loosen the bolts and then removing the Warm up Catalytic Convertor (WCC) (C).

  10. Remove the items below.
    1. Main connector
    2. Parking release actuator connector
    3. Position sensor connector
    4. Electronic Oil Pump (EOP) connector
    5. Crank Position Sensor (CKPS) connector
    6. Ground line and wiring bracket

  11. Loosen the bolt and then dust cover (A).

  12. Loosen the torque converter mounting bolts (B) by rotating the crankshaft (A).

    NOTE:
    • When installing, apply the ATF to the bolts thread before tightening the bolts.
    • When installing, lightly tighten the bolts (6-ea) and then tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
  13. Remove the ATF warmer.
    1. Loosen the bolts and then separate the ATF warmer feed tube (A).

      Tightening torque: 

      7.85 - 11.8 N.m (0.8 - 1.2 kgf.m, 5.79 - 8.68 lb-ft)

      19.6 - 25.5 N.m (2.0 - 2.6 kgf.m, 14.5 - 18.8 lb-ft)

    2. Separate the cooling hose (A) and then removing the ATF warmer (B) after loosening the bolts.

  14. Loosen the starter mounting bolts (A) and the transmission mounting bolts (B, C).

    Tightening torque: 

    1. 49.0 - 63.7 N.m (5.0 - 6.5 kgf.m, 36.2 - 47.0 lb-ft)
    2. 78.5 - 98.1 N.m (4.3 - 5.5 kgf.m, 57.9 - 72.3 lb-ft)
    3. 39.2 - 46.1 N.m (4.0 - 4.7 kgf.m, 28.9 - 34.0 lb-ft)

  15. After separating the transmission from the engine, remove the transmission by lowering the jack slowly.
    CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to damage other nearby wiring or parts when removing the transmission assembly.
