Alternator & Regulator: Description
Metro models built in Japan (VIN J) are equipped with a Nippondenso 50-amp alternator with internal regulator. Metro models built in Canada (VIN 2) are equipped with a Mitsubishi 55-amp alternator with internal regulator. Both alternators are serviceable and can be repaired or overhauled.
The Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator is a solid state unit mounted inside alternator to rear end frame. Voltage regulator voltage cannot be adjusted.
Two brushes carry current through 2 slip rings to field coil mounted on rotor. Stator windings are assembled inside a laminated core forming part of alternator drive and frame assemblies.
A rectifier bridge containing 6 diodes is connected to stator windings. Two neutral diodes are also used to smooth out voltage fluctuations caused by varying alternator speeds. A capacitor (condenser), mounted in regulator, protects the rectifier bridge and neutral diodes. This capacitor also suppresses radio interference noise.
