Alternator & Regulator: Description
Prizm is equipped with 2 different Delco CS-121 alternators or a Nippondenso alternator. Delco alternators used on vehicles with VIN 8 (1.8L) with automatic transaxles have a maximum output of 77 amps. Delco alternators used on vehicles with VIN 6 (1.6L) or VIN 8 (1.8L) with manual transaxles, have a maximum output of 70 amps. Nippondenso alternators maximum output is 70 amps. Delco alternator is a non-serviceable type and must be replaced as a unit. Nippondenso alternator is serviceable and can be repaired or overhauled.
Both alternators use an internal voltage regulator. The Integrated Circuit (IC) regulator is a solid state unit mounted inside alternator to rear end frame. Voltage regulator voltage cannot be adjusted.
Two brushes carry current through 2 slip rings to field coil mounted on rotor. Stator windings are assembled inside a laminated core forming part of alternator drive and frame assemblies. A rectifier bridge containing 6 diodes (8 diodes in Nippondenso unit) is connected to stator windings.
