Circuit Test C1-3, Power Steering Pressure (PSP) Switch Check - 1.0L (VIN 6) & 1.3L (VIN 9): Notes
PSP switch is normally open to ground, and PCM terminal will be near battery voltage. Turning steering wheel increases power steering oil pressure and its load on an idling engine. PSP switch will close before load can cause a poor idling condition. Closing PSP switch causes PCM voltage signal to read less than one volt. PCM will increase idle speed and prevent engine load stall.
NOTE:
Unless stated otherwise in test procedure, perform all voltage tests using a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a minimum 10-megohm input impedance.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Monitor PSP switch. Turn steering wheel to right or left until it reaches its stop. If display indicates ON with steering wheel turned, system is operating normally. If display does not indicate ON with steering wheel turned, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Disconnect PSP switch connector. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between PSP harness connector and ground. If reading is battery voltage, go to next step. If reading is not battery voltage, go to step 4).
- Connect a test light to battery positive terminal. Probe PSP switch terminal (switch side). Start engine. If test light comes on when steering wheel is turned, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If test light does not come on when steering wheel is turned, go to step 5).
- Check Blue/White wire for open or short to ground between PSP switch and PCM. Repair as necessary. If wire is okay, replace PCM. Retest system.
- Check for poor ground connection at power steering pump. Repair as necessary. If ground is okay, replace PSP switch. Retest system.
