Diagnosis & Repair
- Allow engine to cool to ambient temperature. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Compare ECT temperature to IAT temperature parameter displayed. If temperature readings are close, go to next step. If temperature readings are not close, compare ECT temperature with actual coolant temperature. If readings are not close, replace ECT sensor. Retest system.
- Start engine and let idle. Monitor ECT sensor parameter on scan tool. If ECT sensor display does not increase to greater than 104°F (40°C) within 10 minutes, go to next step. If display does increase to greater than 104°F (40°C) within 10 minutes, check for an intermittent problem. See TESTS W/O CODES article.
- If any ECT sensor DTCs are set, go to appropriate DTC test. If no ECT sensor DTCs are set, check coolant level and fill if necessary. Retest system. If coolant level was okay, go to next step.
- Compare ECT sensor display on scan tool with a thermometer. If temperature readings are close, check for stuck-open or missing thermostat. Repair as necessary. If temperature readings are not close, go to next step.
- Check ECT sensor wiring between ECT sensor and PCM for high resistance. Check for poor harness connections. Repair as necessary. If ECT circuit is okay, replace ECT sensor. Retest system.
