SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Lift the vehicle using a hoist.
Remove the rear wheel/tire assemblies.
NOTE: Tightening torque: 88.3~107.9 Nm (9.0~11.0 kgfm, 65.1~79.6 lb-ft) - Position a transmission jack under the right rear control arm by the spring seat.
- Remove the right side stabilizer bar end link nut that mounts the link to the control arm. This link will be re-used.NOTE: Tightening torque: 98.1~117.7 Nm (10.0~12.0 kgfm, 72.3~86.8 lb-ft)
- Remove the lower control arm bolt at the wheel side.NOTE: Tightening torque: 137.3~156.9 Nm (14.0~16.0 kgfm, 101.3~115.7 lb-ft)
- Carefully lower the transmission jack until the control arm swings down and releases the coil spring. Remove the coil spring.
- Mark the location of the alignment washer, then loosen the control arm bolt on the subframe side.NOTE: Tightening torque: 107.9~117.7 Nm (11.0~12.0 kgfm, 79.6~86.8 lb-ft)NOTE: If required, replace the control arm bolts, plates, spring washers, and nuts on both the left and right sides of the vehicle. See step 6a.
- 6a. If the control arm bolt(s) or other fasteners are difficult to remove, it may be necessary to cut the bolt(s) to remove the control arm.
Saw type used in photos: Chicago brand 4 1/2" Reciprocating Saw, 6 amp, 7/8" stroke.
Blade type used in photos: Milwaukee Sawzall 24 TPI 6" blade.
NOTE: When it is required to replace the fastening hardware, submit op codes 30C036R4~6.IMPORTANT: Use caution when removing the fasteners to not damage the rear subframe, fuel tank, or surrounding area.NOTE: Replace all the hardware listed in the parts table on page 2.
Replace the hardware on both left and right sides of the vehicle.
- 6a. If the control arm bolt(s) or other fasteners are difficult to remove, it may be necessary to cut the bolt(s) to remove the control arm.
- Locate the rear subframe. Loosen the two right side mounting bolts to allow clearance to remove the control arm bolt.NOTE: Tightening torque: 156.9~176.5 Nm (16.0~18.0 kgfm, 115.7~130.2 lb-ft)NOTE: All models of Sonata, Sonata HEV, and Azera require that the RIGHT side of the rear subframe be loosened to allow clearance for the bolt to be removed.
Only Sonata HEV requires an additional step to remove a fastener on the LEFT side to allow clearance for the bolt to be removed. See step 9. - Use a pry bar to pull the subframe downwards slightly to create enough clearance between the control arm bolt and the fuel tank. Remove the bolt, and the right side rear lower control arm.NOTE: This step applies to Sonata HEV only. Skip this step for other models.
- On the LEFT side, remove the fastener for the plastic underbody tray closest to the rear control arm.
- Repeat steps 2- 6 on the left side of the vehicle and then remove the left rear lower control arm.NOTE: For Sonata HEV vehicles, push the loosened plastic underbody tray away to create enough clearance for the lower control arm bolt to be removed.
- Install the new rear left and right lower control arms and re-assemble the vehicle in reverse order of removal.
- Adjust the rear wheel alignment to the center of specification using an alignment machine.
