Generator Warning Light

NOTE: On vehicles without charge indicator light, go to UNDERCHARGED OR OVERCHARGED BATTERY TEST .
  1. Visually check generator belt and wiring. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Indicator light should come on. If indicator light comes on, go to step 3). If indicator light does not come on, disconnect generator harness connector at generator. Connect one end of a fused jumper wire to generator harness connector terminal "L" and other end to ground. See Fig 1.
  2. If indicator light comes on when jumper wire is connected (ignition on), repair or replace generator. If indicator light does not come on when jumper wire is connected, locate open between generator harness "L" terminal and ignition switch. Charge indicator light bulb may be burnt out.
  3. Start engine and operate at moderate speed. Charge indicator light should go off. If indicator light stays on, disconnect generator wiring harness connector and observe light. If indicator light goes off, check generator output voltage. If voltage is less than 12.5 volts, repair or replace generator. If indicator light stays on, check for grounded indicator light wire.
