Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostic II (OBD-II) system check. See SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article. Go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VSS harness connector. Connect a test light to positive battery post. Probe VSS connector ground terminal. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair ground circuit as necessary. Retest system.
  3. With sensor disconnected, turn ignition on. Using DVOM, probe VSS connectors ground and voltage supply. If battery voltage is displayed, go to next step. If battery voltage is not displayed on DVOM, repair open or short to ground which may have blown meter fuse. Retest system.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connectors. Using a DVOM, check VSS input circuit between VSS connector and appropriate PCM harness connector for an open circuit or short to ground. Repair as necessary. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  5. Measure resistance between VSS sensor body and transmission case. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, repair or replace VSS as necessary. If resistance is less than 10 k/ohms, replace and reprogram PCM using required equipment. See PROGRAMMING . Retest system.
