April 5, 2026: LEMON Manuals is launched! Read the announcement.

Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Perform ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition on. On scan tool observe FUEL LEVEL parameter. If parameter is 0-1 percent, go to step  4 . If parameter does not indicate 0-1 percent, go to next step.
  3. Test fuel gauge operation. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel level sensor harness connector. Fuel level sensor is located in fuel tank. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and fuel level sensor harness connector No. 4 (Orange/Green wire). If reading is less than 0.13 volt, go to next step. If reading is 0.13 volt or more, go to step  6 .
  5. Check for open in fuel level sensor input (Orange/Green wire) between PCM and fuel level sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If problem is found, go to step  7 . If no problem was found, go to next step.
  6. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground and fuel level sensor terminal No. 1 (Blue/Yellow wire). See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If reading is 2.9 volts or more, go to step  9 . If reading is 2.9 volts or less, go to step  10 .
  7. Repair open in fuel level sensor input (Orange/Green wire) between PCM and fuel level sensor. If problem is found, go to step  11 .
  8. Repair open in fuel level sensor output (Blue/Yellow wire) between PCM and fuel level sensor. After repairs are complete, go to step  11 .
  9. Repair short to voltage in fuel level sensor output (Blue/Yellow wire). After repairs are complete, go to step  11 .
  10. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT  under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. After repairs are complete, go to next step.
  11. Using scan tool, select DTC and clear DTC information. Start engine and idle at normal operating temperature of 167-203°F (75-95°C). Select specified DTC INFO for DTC set. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR SETTING DTC  . If scan tool indicates DTC P0462 RAN AND PASSED, system is okay. If scan tool does not indicate system RAN AND PASSED, repeat test starting in step  2 .
