Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Isuzu Rodeo Sport, 2003 Isuzu Rodeo, and 2003 Isuzu Axiom. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) System Check. See appropriate ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article. After performing OBD-II system check, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition ON, with engine OFF. Review and record Tech 2 Failure Records data, then clear the DTCs. Operate the vehicle within the Failure Records conditions as noted. Using the Tech 2, monitor "DTC" info for DTC P1546. Does the Tech 2 indicate DTC P1546 Ran and Passed? If yes, refer to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If no, go to next Step.
  3. Turn ignition OFF. Remove the A/C Compressor Relay from the Underhood Electrical Center. Turn Ignition ON, with engine OFF. Using a DVM, check for voltage on the Fused pins removed from the A/C Compressor Clutch Relay connector. Does the DVM read 12 Volts? If yes, go to step  5 . If no, go to next Step.
  4. Check the suspect circuit(s) between the A/C Compressor Clutch Relay connector and the Fuse for A short to ground or an open circuit. Was the problem found? Verify repair.
  5. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors from the PCM. Check the A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit between the PCM and underhood electrical center for a short to ground or an open circuit. Was the problem found? If yes, verify repair. If no, go to next step.
  6. Reinstall the A/C compressor clutch relay. Using a fused jumper, ground the A/C compressor clutch relay control circuit at the PCM connector. Turn ignition ON, with engine OFF. Does the A/C Compressor turn ON? If yes, go to Step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  7. Turn ignition OFF. Check the A/C compressor clutch circuit between the A/C compressor clutch relay and A/C compressor clutch for An open circuit or a short to voltage. Was the problem found? If yes, verify repair. If no, go to next Step.
  8. Replace the A/C Compressor Clutch Relay. After relay is replaced, verify repair.
  9. Replace and reprogram PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE REPLACEMENT under POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - RODEO & RODEO SPORT 2.2L article. After repair, repeat OBD-II system check. See ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC II SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
