Transmission Selector Lever
- Remove the battery cover and disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove the shift lever knob. See TRANSMISSION SELECTOR LEVER KNOB .
- Remove the J-gate surround. See SELECTOR LEVER GATE FINISH PANEL .
- Remove the console finisher veneer panel. See FLOOR CONSOLE FINISH PANEL for 2001 or FLOOR CONSOLE FINISH PANEL for 2002-03.
- Remove the center console assembly, see FLOOR CONSOLE for 2001 or FLOOR CONSOLE for 2002-03.
- Remove the selector lever indicator assembly. See SELECTOR LEVER INDICATOR ASSEMBLY .
- Detach the selector cable from the gear shift assembly.
- Remove the inner cable to shift lever nut.
- Slacken the outer cable locknuts.

- Remove the gear shift assembly.
- Remove the four fixings.
- Remove the slide plate.
- Remove the four screws.
- Remove the slide block/shaft assembly.
- Remove the gearshift interlock solenoid actuating lever.
- Remove the actuating lever cover.
- Remove the actuating lever securing nut.
- Remove the shift lever assembly from the housing.
- Remove the washer from the pivot shaft.
- Disassemble the shift mechanism.
- Remove the return spring.
- Remove the pivot shaft nut, washer and pivot shaft.
- Remove the pivot bracket, detent plate and washer.
- Remove the ball and spring.
- Clean all components.
- Reassemble the shift mechanism.
- Apply grease and install the detent ball and spring.
- Apply grease to the pivot bracket and install the bracket, detent plate and washer.
- Install the pivot shaft, washer and nut.
- Apply grease and locate the return spring.
- Fit the shift lever assembly to the housing.
- Apply grease to the lever pivot and install the pivot washer. See Fig 5.
- Install the gearshift interlock solenoid actuating lever.
- Secure the actuating lever nut.
- Fit the actuating lever cover.
- Install the slide block/shaft assembly.
- Clean the slide block and shaft.
- Apply grease to the shaft.

- Install the slide plate.
- Install the four slide plate screws. See Fig 2.
- Fit the gear shift assembly.
- Install the four nuts. See Fig 1.
- Assemble the cable to the gear shift assembly.
- Locate the outer cable.
- Fit and tighten the cable securing nut to the specified torque figure.

- Adjust, or verify, the cable in accordance with SELECTOR LEVER CABLE ADJUSTMENT .
- Further installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
- Connect the battery and fit the battery cover.
- Reset the radio and the clock.
