Test NTC-21A - Checking Water-In-Fuel Lamp & Sensor

NOTE: This test only applies to problems with WATER-IN-FUEL lamp.
NOTE: For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article in this section.
  1. Disconnect Water-In-Fuel (WIF) sensor connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  2. Connect jumper wire between WIF sensor connector, sensor signal circuit (Dark Green/Red), and engine ground. Turn ignition off, then on to recycle lamp. If WIF lamp comes on, perform TEST NTC-21B . If WIF lamp does not come on, turn ignition off and go to next step.
  3. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A . If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  4. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of WIF sensor signal circuit (Dark Green/Red wire) between WIF sensor connector and PCM Black connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open WIF sensor signal circuit and perform TEST VER-2A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, turn ignition on and go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on PCM Gray connector, WIF lamp driver circuit (Tan/Orange wire). If voltage is more than 10 volts, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect WIF lamp connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A . If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  7. Inspect WIF lamp bulb. If bulb is burned-out, replace bulb and perform TEST VER-2A. If bulb is okay, reinstall bulb and go to next step.
  8. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, backprobe message center connector, fused ignition switch output circuit (Light Green/Yellow wire). If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open fused ignition switch output circuit and perform TEST VER-2A . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
  9. Connect a jumper wire between PCM Gray connector, WIF lamp driver circuit (Tan/Orange) and engine ground. If WIF lamp does not come on, repair open WIF lamp driver circuit and perform TEST VER-2A. If WIF lamp comes on, replace message center printed circuit assembly and perform TEST VER-2A .
