Test TC-35A - No Vehicle Speed Sensor Signal

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, refer to CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article in this section.
WARNING: Keep hands and feet clear of rotating wheels.
  1. Raise and support vehicle so drive wheels are free to rotate. Start engine. Using scan tool, read Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) signal. Place transmission in any forward gear. If scan tool displays zero MPH, go to step 4). If scan tool displays more than zero MPH, go to next step.
  2. Condition required to set DTC is not present at this time. NO VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SIGNAL DTC sets if no VSS signal is received at Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for more than 11 seconds. Possible causes are: open or shorted VSS wiring, defective connections, defective speedometer drive gear, defective VSS or PCM. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect all related wiring and connectors. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A . If wiring and connectors are okay, see INACTIVE DTC CONDITION . VSS test okay at this time. Perform TEST VER-2A.
  4. Ensure VSS is properly installed. Correct VSS installation as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If VSS is properly installed, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect VSS connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool in voltmeter mode, check voltage on VSS connector, 5-volt supply circuit (Orange wire). If voltage is 4 volts or less, repair open 5-volt supply circuit and perform TEST VER-2A . If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step.
  7. Check voltage on VSS connector, signal circuit (White/Orange wire). If voltage is 4 volts or less, go to step 10). If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step.
  8. Connect a jumper wire to VSS connector, signal circuit (White/Orange wire). Using scan tool, read VSS signal. Momentarily touch remaining end of jumper wire to VSS connector, ground circuit (Black/Light Blue wire) while monitoring VSS signal. If scan tool displays zero MPH, perform TEST TC-35B . If scan tool displays more than zero MPH, go to step next step.
  9. Remove VSS. Inspect speedometer pinion gear for damage. Repair pinion gear as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A . If pinion gear is okay, replace VSS and perform TEST VER-2A.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Inspect connectors and terminals for damage. Repair connectors and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connectors and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  11. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance of signal circuit (White/Orange wire) between VSS connector and PCM White connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open signal circuit and perform TEST VER-2A . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM White connector, signal circuit (White/Orange wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM and perform TEST VER-2A. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
  13. If vehicle is not equipped with Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), repair short to ground in signal circuit (White/Orange wire) and perform TEST VER-2A. If vehicle is equipped with DRL, disconnect DRL module connector. Inspect connector and terminals for damage. Repair connector and terminals as necessary and perform TEST VER-2A. If connector and terminals are okay, go to next step.
  14. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of PCM White connector, signal circuit (White/Orange wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace DRL module and perform TEST VER-2A . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair short to ground in signal circuit and perform TEST VER-2A.
