2.5L Engine
NOTE:
Ignition timing is NOT adjusted by moving distributor. Distributor position determines fuel synchronization only. Distributor contains an internal oil seal which is not serviceable.
- If distributor was removed from engine, go to next step. Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located inside distributor. If CMP sensor was removed from distributor without disturbing distributor adjustment, no adjustment is necessary.CAUTION: DO NOT rotate engine against normal rotation to align timing marks.
- Remove cylinder No. 1 spark plug. Rotate engine (in direction of normal rotation) until pressure is felt in cylinder No. 1. Slowly continue to rotate engine until timing mark aligns with Top Dead Center (TDC) (zero degrees) on timing scale. Check position of oil pump slot on oil pump gear. Oil pump slot should be positioned just before (counterclockwise) of 10 o'clock. See Fig 1 . If oil pump slot is not positioned properly, use a flat-blade screwdriver to adjust position.
- If original distributor is being installed, go to next step. Factory replacement distributors come with a plastic pin installed to properly align rotor to cylinder No. 1 position during distributor installation. If factory replacement distributor has a plastic pin installed, go to step 5 .
- Remove distributor cap, rotor and CMP sensor from distributor. Four different alignment holes are available on the plastic ring. See Fig 2
to identify proper alignment hole. Insert a pin punch or like tool through distributor housing and plastic ring. This will prevent distributor shaft from rotating. Go to next step.NOTE: During distributor installation it may be necessary to rotate rotor and distributor shaft slightly to engage distributor with slot in oil pump gear.
- Clean distributor mounting area of engine block. Install a NEW distributor-to-engine gasket. Install rotor onto distributor shaft. Hold distributor base slot at 1 o'clock position. See Fig 3 . Continue to install distributor into engine. Rotor and distributor will rotate clockwise during installation. When distributor is fully seated in engine, centerline of base slot should be aligned to clamp bolt hole on engine. See Fig 4 . Rotor should be positioned slightly past 3 o'clock position. Go to next step.
- Pin punch or plastic pin should still be installed in distributor, cylinder No. 1 piston at TDC and centerline of base slot on distributor should be aligned with hold-down bolt hole. Hold-down bolt should easily pass through slot into engine. Go to next step.
- Install and tighten distributor hold-down clamp and hold-down bolt. Tighten hold-down bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 N.m). Remove rotor. Install CMP sensor, rotor and distributor cap. Install spark plug No. 1 and spark plug wire. Connect distributor wiring harness to engine harness.
