Description & Operation

WARNING: Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Shift interlock system consists of a shift interlock cable/solenoid assembly connected between ignition switch and floor shifter. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . A brakelight switch and PCM sense circuits are used to control Brake Transmission Shifter Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC position, gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in RUN position, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. Depressing brake pedal energizes BTSI solenoid and allows gearshift lever to be moved to any position. Shift interlock system also prevents ignition switch from being rotated to LOCK or ACC position unless gearshift lever is returned to Park. See Fig 3 .
